How Do I Sort Media Files, and What Can I Sort By?

Infinite Uploads gives you sorting options for both your folders and the media files inside them.

Sorting Folders

Use the sort dropdown at the top of the folder sidebar. You've got 8 options:

  1. Custom (default). Folders stay in whatever order you manually arrange them. Drag and drop to reorder.
  2. A-Z. Alphabetical, ascending.
  3. Z-A. Alphabetical, descending.
  4. Date Created (Oldest First). Folders you created first appear at the top.
  5. Date Created (Newest First). Most recently created folders appear at the top.
  6. Date Modified (Oldest First). Folders that haven't been touched in a while appear at the top.
  7. Date Modified (Newest First). Recently updated folders appear at the top.
  8. Size (Smallest / Largest). Sorts by the total size of all files inside each folder.

Size sorting calculates the combined filesize of every media item in the folder. If you're trying to find which folder is eating up your storage, this is the one to use.

Sorting Media Files

Inside any folder (or in the All Files / Uncategorized views), you can sort the media items themselves by:

  • File Size. Sorts by the size of each individual file in bytes.
  • File Extension. Groups files by type (jpg, png, pdf, mp4, etc.).
  • File Type. Sorts by MIME type category (image, video, document, audio).

These options work alongside the default WordPress sorting options (date, title, etc.) that are already built into the Media Library.

Sorting applies to your current view. If you're searching within a folder, the sort order applies to the search results. If you're browsing All Files, it applies to the full library. The two features work together without any extra configuration.
