Offloading your Media Library to Infinite Uploads does not hurt your SEO. Your pages keep their rankings, and faster image delivery can help them. The one thing that changes is your image URLs, so Google Images needs to recrawl them once.
What Changes When You Offload
Once your files are synced, Infinite Uploads serves your images from your CDN URL (like https://xxxxx.infiniteuploads.cloud/) instead of from /wp-content/uploads/ on your server. Existing media links are rewritten on the fly as your pages load, and new uploads use the cloud URL directly. We cover this in more detail in Are Infinite Upload Cloud URLs Added to Each Image?
What stays the same:
- Your alt text, titles, captions, and filenames
- Your page URLs and page content
- Which pages each image appears on
Your Page Rankings
Google credits an image to the page that displays it, not to the domain the file is hosted on. Serving images from a CDN is a common, Google-supported setup, so moving your media to Infinite Uploads does not affect how your pages rank.
Google Image Search
Because the image URLs change, Google treats them as new images. It picks up the new URLs the next time it crawls your pages, and traffic from Google Images can dip for a short time while it catches up. How long that takes depends on how often Google crawls your site. Your regular search results are not affected.
Note: If image search traffic matters to your site, set up your custom CDN domain before you offload so your image URLs only change once.
Faster Images Help SEO
Page speed is a Google ranking signal, measured through Core Web Vitals. On most pages, the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element is an image, so delivering images from our global CDN, closer to your visitors, directly improves one of the metrics Google uses.
Infinite Uploads business plans also include Image Optimization, which:
- Compresses your images
- Converts them to AVIF or WebP for browsers that support them
- Right-sizes them to your maximum image width
Optimized images are served from the same URL, so turning on Image Optimization does not change your image URLs again. Your original files are never modified. See How Image Optimization Works for details.
Use a Custom CDN Domain
A custom CDN domain like cdn.yoursitename.com or media.yoursitename.com keeps your images on your own brand instead of xxxxx.infiniteuploads.cloud. It also means you can switch CDN providers later without your image URLs changing again.
Changing your CDN domain after Google has indexed your images is another URL change, so it is best done first. Follow the steps in Setting Up a Custom CDN URL.
Note: Custom CDN URLs are only available through our business plans.
Image Sitemaps
SEO plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math build your image sitemap from the URLs WordPress provides, so after offloading your sitemap lists the CDN URLs. Google accepts image URLs in a sitemap that are hosted on a different domain than your site, so there is nothing extra to configure.
Why It Works This Way
Search engines rank pages, not file locations. An image's SEO value comes from the page it sits on, its alt text, and the content around it, and none of that changes when you offload. Moving delivery to a CDN is a standard practice on large sites because it makes pages faster without giving up any of that context.
