How Do I Create Folders and Subfolders in the WordPress Media Library?

Infinite Uploads adds a folder sidebar directly into your WordPress Media Library. Creating folders takes about 2 seconds.

Creating a Folder

  1. Open your WordPress Media Library (Media > Library).
  2. Look at the left sidebar. You’ll see a “New Folder” button at the top.
  3. Click “New Folder,” type your folder name, and hit Enter.

That’s it. Your new folder appears in the sidebar tree immediately.

Creating a Subfolder

Subfolders work the same way, with one extra step.

  1. Click the parent folder you want to nest under.
  2. Click “New Folder.”
  3. Name it and hit Enter.

The new folder is created inside the one you selected. You can nest folders as deep as you need. There’s no limit.

Rearranging Folders

You can drag and drop folders to reorder them or move them inside other folders. Grab a folder in the sidebar and drop it on another folder to make it a subfolder. Drop it into empty space in the tree to move it back to the root level.

Folder Sort Order

By default, folders use a custom sort order. That means they stay exactly where you put them. If you’d rather sort automatically, use the sort dropdown at the top of the sidebar. You can sort folders alphabetically, by date created, by date modified, or by total size.

Quick Tips

  • Every folder you create tracks who made it. This matters for permissions on multi-user sites.
  • Folder names and colors can be changed later by right-clicking the folder.
  • Use “Expand All” and “Collapse All” in the More menu to quickly navigate large folder trees.
