Why Can’t I Rename, Move, or Delete a Folder?

If you’re clicking on a folder and the rename, move, or delete options are grayed out or missing, it’s almost certainly a permissions issue.

The Permission Rule

Infinite Uploads uses a simple permission model for folders:

  • Administrators (users with the “manage_options” capability) can manage ALL folders on the site. It doesn’t matter who created the folder. Admins have full control over every folder: rename, move, delete, change color, the works.
  • Non-administrators can only manage folders they created themselves. If another user created a folder, you can see it and browse its contents, but you can’t rename it, move it, delete it, or change its color.

How Do I Know Who Created a Folder?

Every folder tracks the user who created it. If you’re a non-admin and you can’t manage a folder, it was created by someone else on your site. Ask your site administrator if you need changes made to that folder, or ask them to create the folder under your account.

I’m an Admin and It Still Won’t Work

If you’re logged in as an administrator and still can’t manage a folder, double check that your user role actually has the “manage_options” capability. Some sites use custom roles or role-editing plugins that might strip this capability. You can verify your capabilities with a plugin like “User Role Editor” or by checking with your site developer.

Can I Change These Permissions?

The permission model is built into Infinite Uploads and can’t be customized per-folder. It’s designed to be straightforward: admins manage everything, everyone else manages their own folders. This prevents users from accidentally (or intentionally) reorganizing someone else’s folder structure on shared sites.
