How Do I Move Existing Files Into a Folder?
If you’ve got hundreds (or thousands) of media files sitting in your library with no organization, you can drag them into folders without re-uploading anything.
Drag and Drop (Single File)
- Open your Media Library.
- Find the file you want to move in the grid or list view.
- Drag it onto any folder in the sidebar.
The folder highlights when you hover over it, so you know exactly where the file is going. Drop it, and the file moves instantly.
Moving Multiple Files at Once
- Select the files you want to move. In list view, use the checkboxes. In grid view, click to select multiple items.
- Drag any one of the selected files onto the target folder.
- All selected files move together in a single action.
This is the fastest way to organize a large library. Select a batch, drag, done.
Moving Files to Uncategorized
If you want to remove a file from its current folder without putting it somewhere else, drag it onto the “Uncategorized” virtual folder at the top of the sidebar. The file stays in your Media Library. It just won’t be assigned to any folder.
What Happens to the File When You Move It
Moving a file into a folder doesn’t change the file itself. Your URLs stay the same. Your links stay intact. The file’s physical location on your server (or CDN) doesn’t change. Folders are purely organizational. Think of it like putting a label on a file in a filing cabinet, not moving the actual cabinet.
